Buyer’s guide

The makhana suta size guide.

Suta is the language of the makhana trade. Here is what each grade means, how big the pops are, and which one fits your business.

What does “suta” mean?

After popping, makhana is passed through a stack of sieves. The traditional unit for the hole size is the suta, and makhana is sold by the sieve it stays on. A higher suta number means a bigger pop. Bigger pops are rarer, whiter and command a higher price.

Because pop size also affects how many pieces you get per kilo, the right grade depends on your product: a premium gift box, a kirana loose pack, a flavoured snack or makhana flour all call for different sutas.

Good to know

Questions, answered.

How is suta measured?

Suta grading uses a set of sieves with progressively larger holes. Pops that stay on a larger sieve get a higher suta number. One suta step is roughly 3 mm in pop diameter.

Which suta grade is best for retail packs?

5 suta and 6+ suta are preferred for retail because larger, whiter pops look premium on shelf. 4 suta is popular for value packs and kirana trade.

Which grade should I use for roasting and flavouring?

5 suta gives the best balance of crunch, coating surface and cost. 6+ suta is used for premium flavoured lines.

What is "pop rate"?

Pop rate is the share of fully opened, white pops in a lot, as opposed to half-popped or hard kernels. Higher is better.
